Statement:
Voice embodies a longing and prayer for authenticity and creative expression. Just after coming out as a lesbian, leaving my home and community, I worked for a summer at a Benedictine women’s monastery. This painting felt enormously brave (and private) when I created it that summer, yet it served as a kind of guide and healing presence as I slowly found my way through the trauma of all those changes toward the beauty of who I might become.
